Artist Statement

The plate wants what the plate wants; the artist wants what the artist wants and somehow you wind up with a mutual understanding and that is the end product. To befriend a medium of art is to enter into an agreement in which you let one another be themselves. I found this to be exceptionally true for me with intaglio printmaking. It’s a team effort I treat with great respect.

I am specifically interested in a dry point process called Mezzotint, where repeated rocking with a curved, grooved blade roughens the entire surface of a copperplate. There is a feeling of ownership over every perforated stroke, which gives me a quiet sense of accomplishment and wills me to continue forward. The flat velvet black of a well-rocked ground is the greatest reward to me.

My compositions consist of mostly figurative work intertwined with various patterns and shapes, which the mezzotint process encourages. I favor rendering the human body because it is extraordinary; filled with patterns, which were critical in the development of my life. They become a way to channel peace when I am overwhelmed and need to clear my mind.
